About Carolyn D. Johnson
Carolyn D. Johnson, a Harlem native, is the president and owner of Welcome to Harlem, a local tour company she founded in 2004 to celebrate and preserve the vibrant history and rich culture of this iconic neighborhood. Through her work, Johnson is committed to honoring Harlem’s legacy and sharing its stories with the world.
In 2014, she partnered with jazz expert Craig Harris to co-found Harlem Jazz Boxx, a platform that offers regular, affordable live jazz and gospel performances. Harris, who has over 50 years of experience in the jazz world, also serves as the curator of the Harlem Jazz and Gospel Series.
Beyond tourism and live music, Johnson is dedicated to education and community engagement. She developed Harlem Roots, an online educational program for students, and Harlem-Olopy (Harlem Renaissance Edition), an interactive experience celebrating Harlem’s artistic legacy. She also created the Harlem Time Trotters podcast, which dives into the stories and sounds of the neighborhood.
Johnson is a graduate of the City University of New York, a licensed tour guide, and the co-author of The Harlem Travel Guide.
In all her work, Johnson combines a deep love for Harlem with a strong commitment to education, the arts, and cultural preservation. Her projects not only promote tourism but also provide meaningful ways for both locals and visitors to engage with Harlem’s past and present.
She has received recognition for her contributions to the community and her innovative approach to cultural programming. Johnson often collaborates with schools, cultural institutions, and fellow creatives to ensure that Harlem’s unique heritage continues to inspire future generations.
Whether she’s guiding a walking tour, producing a podcast episode, or curating an educational program, Carolyn D. Johnson remains a passionate advocate for Harlem. Her vision is rooted in storytelling, accessibility, and empowerment—ensuring that Harlem's voice continues to be heard loud and clear on the global stage.
